After a day in the dirt (one row of dahlia tubers lifted, 14 rows to go! 😅), it was a treat to visit the remaining pockets of blooms on our property. I can’t get enough of this chrysanthemum explosion!

1-4: Scenes from an overgrown mum bed. R

Last year I was curious about heirloom chrysanthemums and thought I’d better scratch that itch by planting a few in my raised beds. Little did I know I would find them among the easiest flowers to grow and propagate. Like any committed flower j

The caption ^^^ is in the post, which I suppose means it’s not a caption at all.

$I may have kept entirely too many first year dahlia seedlings. The first photo is a fraction of what I dug up today (all firsties, all ridiculously cute). Now all the first year seedlings are in storage; tomorrow I’ll move onto second and third$

I’ve been thinking a lot about confidence lately and what that looks like as a pseudo public-facing person. I suspect most who grew up in the 80s/90s were deeply entrenched in the mindset that confidence = an extroverted, popular, well-spoken,

Here are a few of the heirloom mums I’m loving right now. I can’t remember the name of the second one (drat!), but that aside, I am thoroughly enjoying these charmers in our raised beds. I don’t protect them from frost so I know the

Am I the only one who feels mildly irritated with posts labeled “hot takes” or “controversial” that are actually about as mild as you can get? Maybe I’m just old, but I don’t find any of these dahlia growing concep

Parts of the field were kissed with frost last night, parts were entirely unbothered, and parts just look confused. The smell of decay was evident when I got home from school today, but that hard killing frost still eludes us.

I’m in no hurry

This weekend was the final push to photograph dahlias for the website. Some dahlias desperately needed retakes, and others were new-to-me varieties that needed their first glamor shot. Now comes the long process of getting the photos online!

I’ve been in seed saving mode the past few weeks, bouncing back and forth between harvesting sweet pea seed pods and dahlia seed pods. The dahlia seedling bug bit me pretty hard and now it’s almost painful to walk past a ripening dahlia s

When it feels like everything is a hot pile of garbage (or in this case, a steamy heap of compost), I remind myself that sometimes things have to break down to be rebuilt into something even better. Sometimes, beautiful things grow by feeding on the

It’s time to start thinking about names for these dahlias! I’m cautiously optimistic that 2024-3, 2024-8, and 2024-13 will be released in 2028. I want one more season for observation (and to put them to the test in an ADS trial garden) to

Collarette dahlias are such generous seed producers and their “babies” are incredibly fun to grow. I’ve been madly harvesting seed pods and dreaming about next year’s crew of new-to-the-world collarettes.
